Cost per mile is total operating expense divided by the miles over which those expenses are incurred. Include both loaded and empty miles.

How to estimate it

If total operating expenses are $4,000 across 2,500 miles, your estimated operating cost is $1.60 per mile. Compare that with all-mile revenue, not just the loaded-mile rate.
